Fun With A Facebook Scammer

These scammers are all over the place and have been for a very long time, from faxes to email to now on Linkedin and Facebook. Some are quite sophisticated, some are ridiculous and sometimes you just gotta have some fun with it. I did this with a Nigerian email scammer back around 2001 and was shocked when a $56,000 check actually showed up at my house, which I took to the bank and we determined it was a forged check. I got the FBI involved and gave them all the information and that was that.

Yesterday I had someone send me a friend request on Facebook and I had a mutual friend in the music industry, so I just accepted it, I’m not real picky, I just remove them if they are a problem. The guy starts sending me some messages and this story mostly unfolds on its own, so the screenshots of the discussion follows. Yes, it is as convoluted as it seems and no, I never went to the bank to try and send him anything and no FBI was actually involved in this.

Now at this point he asks me to text and call this phone number, which I never do, it’s a spoofed number.

I really don’t understand what he is talking about with the car document and various other things at this stage, so I just keep responding with random stuff. The address I give him here is fake and I’m leaving out the email address I gave him.

At this point he is also frantically sending me emails at the same time from an address that says “HomeLand Security” as the sender. Now I’m really starting to mess around with him.

The information he emailed me was totally ridiculous as far as bank information, but he also used some invoicing system to send me an invoice.

So now we really up the ante and tell him that the FBI has arrived and then the “agent” starts to talk to him.

At this point I almost feel bad for him, he seems to have a heartfelt plea to the “FBI” to release me.

And that is the end of it for now, he might keep trying, it was a very weird scam and I certainly hope that no one fell for this guy. Sometimes it is just fun to play them out.
