Exactly right. I had a theory in the 80’s that C had become popular because it was so hard that you saw all sorts of books about it in the store and articles in the magazines and entire magazines devoted to it, but you didn’t see that for COBOL, so it didn’t have the same perceived usage. The very fact that C was difficult is what gave rise to its popularity.
